Having an ultrasound (sonogram) is an important step in evaluating your pregnancy options. This information is important whether you are considering abortion or continuing your pregnancy. At the Catherine Foundation we offer FREE limited obstetrical ultrasounds that:
- Confirm a pregnancy
- Detect a fetal heartbeat
- fetal age
- due date
- location of pregnancy (intrauterine/ectopic)
A trans-abdominal ultrasound is a medical procedure that uses a device (transducer) that is moved along the abdomen sending sound waves through the uterus. These sound waves bounce off the baby in the form of echoes. A computer picks up the echo messages and translates them onto the screen. It is best to have a full bladder for a trans-abdominal ultrasound because sound waves move more easily through liquid than air. In addition a full bladder elevates the uterus toward your belly button (if you have an anteverted uterus) making it have a flatter surface, hence a clearer image/visualization.
Trans-abdominal and transvaginal ultrasounds are provided as necessity dictates. Limited obstetrical ultrasound examinations will not diagnose gender, fetal abnormalities, and/or problems.
